25 Bible Verses About Conceit (NIV)

²³ This is what the LORD says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches,

¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

⁷ Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.

¹ If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, ² then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. ³ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. ⁴ Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. ⁵ Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: ⁶ Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, ⁷ but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. ⁸ And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross! ⁹ Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹ and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

¹² Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

²² Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

¹⁵ The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.

²¹ Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.

³ If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. ⁴ Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else,

¹² I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer discreetly.

⁴ Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.

¹¹ A rich man may be wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has discernment sees through him.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector.

²⁶ He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.

² Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them. ³ If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, ⁴ he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions ⁵ and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. ²⁸ Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. ²⁹ Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, ³⁰ because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me.

²⁵ I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.

² Though they dig down to the depths of the grave, from there my hand will take them. Though they climb up to the heavens, from there I will bring them down.

⁶ He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.

¹ "Does not man have hard service on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired man? ² Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired man waiting eagerly for his wages, ³ so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have been assigned to me. ⁴ When I lie down I think, 'How long before I get up?' The night drags on, and I toss till dawn. ⁵ My body is clothed with worms and scabs, my skin is broken and festering. ⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope. ⁷ Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again. ⁸ The eye that now sees me will see me no longer; you will look for me, but I will be no more. ⁹ As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to the grave does not return. ¹⁰ He will never come to his house again; his place will know him no more. ¹¹ "Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep, that you put me under guard? ¹³ When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint, ¹⁴ even then you frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions, ¹⁵ so that I prefer strangling and death, rather than this body of mine. ¹⁶ I despise my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone; my days have no meaning. ¹⁷ "What is man that you make so much of him, that you give him so much attention, ¹⁸ that you examine him every morning and test him every moment? ¹⁹ Will you never look away from me, or let me alone even for an instant? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, O watcher of men? Why have you made me your target? Have I become a burden to you? ²¹ Why do you not pardon my offenses and forgive my sins? For I will soon lie down in the dust; you will search for me, but I will be no more."

¹ "Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment? Why must those who know him look in vain for such days? ² Men move boundary stones; they pasture flocks they have stolen. ³ They drive away the orphan's donkey and take the widow's ox in pledge. ⁴ They thrust the needy from the path and force all the poor of the land into hiding. ⁵ Like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go about their labor of foraging food; the wasteland provides food for their children. ⁶ They gather fodder in the fields and glean in the vineyards of the wicked. ⁷ Lacking clothes, they spend the night naked; they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold. ⁸ They are drenched by mountain rains and hug the rocks for lack of shelter. ⁹ The fatherless child is snatched from the breast; the infant of the poor is seized for a debt. ¹⁰ Lacking clothes, they go about naked; they carry the sheaves, but still go hungry. ¹¹ They crush olives among the terraces; they tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst. ¹² The groans of the dying rise from the city, and the souls of the wounded cry out for help. But God charges no one with wrongdoing. ¹³ "There are those who rebel against the light, who do not know its ways or stay in its paths. ¹⁴ When daylight is gone, the murderer rises up and kills the poor and needy; in the night he steals forth like a thief. ¹⁵ The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk; he thinks, 'No eye will see me,' and he keeps his face concealed. ¹⁶ In the dark, men break into houses, but by day they shut themselves in; they want nothing to do with the light. ¹⁷ For all of them, deep darkness is their morning; they make friends with the terrors of darkness. ¹⁸ "Yet they are foam on the surface of the water; their portion of the land is cursed, so that no one goes to the vineyards. ¹⁹ As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow, so the grave snatches away those who have sinned. ²⁰ The womb forgets them, the worm feasts on them; evil men are no longer remembered but are broken like a tree. ²¹ They prey on the barren and childless woman, and to the widow show no kindness. ²² But God drags away the mighty by his power; though they become established, they have no assurance of life. ²³ He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways. ²⁴ For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others; they are cut off like heads of grain. ²⁵ "If this is not so, who can prove me false and reduce my words to nothing?"

¹ But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. ² People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, ³ without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, ⁴ treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- ⁵ having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
